Morehouse School of Medicine / Tuskegee University / UAB Training Program
The Cancer Research Training Program is part of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Tuskegee University (TU), and University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center (UAB) Partnership, funded by NCI.
The goal of the MSM/TU/UAB Partnership Cancer Research Training Program is to establish a program that encourages interest and facilitates student training in cancer research. Through attendance and participation in designated seminars, workshops and mini-courses, in addition to an independent research project guided by a mentor, research students are able to enhance their knowledge, scientific techniques and expertise in cancer research. Participants in these activities will become stronger candidates to continue for advanced degrees in the field of cancer research and to progress to be independent investigators.
The overall purpose of the Partnership between the three institutions is to develop and sustain a collaboration between UAB, Morehouse, and Tuskegee. The development of the MSM/TU/UAB Partnership enhances the chances of investigators from all three institutions to become independent and culturally sensitive researchers. Urban and rural African American communities benefit from the development and implementation of the Partnership programs. The successful partnership will make significant contributions to the elimination of the gap in cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality between whites and African Americans.
The 2004 summer program was the third annual program. The culmination of the eight-week Cancer Research Training Program was the poster session at the Summer Institute, July 22-23, 2004, the annual conference of the Partnership, during which the students presented a research proposal poster of their work in the program.
Qualified graduate students of all majors are encouraged to apply to the Cancer Research Training Program. Students submit an application form, essay, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and reference letters in the early spring.
