We are delighted to announce the call for applications for the updated Health Disparities Research Training Award Program. Scholar applications are due Monday, Jan. 14.
A strategy in eliminating disparities is developing a cadre of researchers committed to finding solutions to reverse existing trends and develop new knowledge aimed at prevention. We seek enthusiastic applicants dedicated to devoting the required time to meet the training objectives. The program, designed to support the scholars in developing a competitive proposal, will culminate in a pilot project based on the scholar’s grant proposal.
This interdisciplinary professional development program is recruiting and will train post-doctoral students, junior faculty, and mid-level faculty interested in making a transition to disparities research (transitional faculty). We encourage interested minority and non-minority faculty to apply for the February 2008 to January 2009 program.
The Objectives of the Health Disparities Research Training Award Program are to:
- Develop independent researchers in the area of health disparities research
- Provide instruction in scientific research methodology and design
- Provide training in health disparities and innovative approaches to reduce them
- Teach scientific writing and grant preparation skills.
A final product of an R03 (or equivalent) grant proposal must be written and submitted by each scholar during the training period. For those proposals meeting the selection criteria, $10,000 in pilot project funds will be provided to the scholar to start his/her project while his/her grant proposal is reviewed by a funding agency.
This training program will strengthen the research and grant/manuscript writing skills of faculty in order to develop independent researchers who will bring in more research funding, particularly in the area of health disparities. Please see the application at the link below for more details.
The Health Disparities Research Training Award is sponsored by the Center for Aging (CFA), the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC), the Center for Outcome and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE), and the Minority Health and Research Center (MHRC) at UAB, in addition to the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Tuskegee University (TU), University of Alabama (UA), and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Extramural support for the program is coming from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities (CMHD), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
