WALK Feel Alive
Program Goal
Develop a statewide campaign to create awareness and
knowledge of the health benefits of WALKing on a daily basis
and motivate more African American and Hispanics in Alabama to
WALK as a way to prevent diseases.
Program Objective
Motivate the target audience to WALK and engage them in
integrating walking in their daily routine (it is almost as if the
campaign was motivating people to walk in the same way they
breath—walk to live).
WALK for your body, for your mind, for your spirit.
WALK delays aging process...feel younger, brighter, active.
WALK reenergizes your life ...enjoy all activities again, feel pretty and sexy.
Strategy
Partnering with the Birmingham city Mayor and Deep South
Network for Cancer Control, 100 inner city neighborhoods (23
communities) were targeted to participate in the WALK program.
Community leaders were identified and recruited to be team
captains and told about the benefits of walking. These individuals
than encouraged other members of the community to join a WALK
team. This recruitment and training culminated in a WALK off
held at Legion Field in July 2006, with over 1800 registered
walkers.
This program continues to be a huge success and now includes
22 counties in Alabama as well as Mississippi.
