UAB Health Evaluation
Health Evaluation Referral Follow-up Summaries
UAB Health Evaluation events have taken place at three locations. Organized by the MHRC and sponsored by the Alabama Underserved Health Partnership (AUHP), this project is a unique collaborative effort involving the UAB Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, and Public Health; UAB University-Wide Centers: Health Promotion, Minority Health and Research, Vision Science Research; and the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama, established to facilitate efforts to improve the health status of underserved residents in Alabama. UAB faculty, staff, students and other volunteers convened to provide health screenings to members of the church, schools and community.

- Health History
The last station was Health Education. Here physicians, nurses, and health educators spoke with each participant about their individual results from all the screenings. This component of the event added to the value of the information provided to the people who received the tests. Lastly, the participants received an appreciation gift and refreshments at the end.
The 238 total participants created a steady flow of people throughout the events. General feedback received from both participants and staff has been positive. In addition, follow-up phone calls were made to the participants who had a referral advised, to determine if they complied with the recommendations. Approximately one third to one half of the participants contacted had been to see a doctor, nurse or healthcare provider as a result of the recommendations made at the event.
