MHRC Services & Benefits
The UAB Minority Health and Research Center (MHRC), provides UAB and community researchers with an infrastructure to develop research initiatives aimed at eliminating racial/ethnic health disparities, career development and training activities, and community outreach in health initiatives. Through the MHRC, faculty will gain access to the necessary resources that will enhance and develop their skills in minority health research, education, and medical service. This support, plus access to the specific services of the MHRC programs and cores will greatly enhance faculty opportunities and success in obtaining funding for minority health research
MHRC is a resource center that provides services to:
- UAB faculty
- Partner Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) faculty
- State and Government agencies
- Minority Students (graduate and undergraduate)
Services to UAB and partner institutions investigators
- Identify minority health research opportunities (African Americans, Latinos, and Asians).
- Assist in development of grant proposals – facilitate submittal and secure grant awards.
- Link researchers with other investigators as mentors or research partners.
- Advise and council in research; training; community outreach; statistics & molecular genetics; participant access to research; and bioethics issues.
- Provide training in the areas of cultural competency and in bioethics specifically related to working with minority and underserved populations.
- Provide training in grant and manuscript writing in Health Disparities.
- Provide access to the following events: 1) monthly career development noon seminars targeting junior faculty; 2) Manuscript writing retreat; 3) quarterly workshops in health disparity related issues; and 4) annual scientific conference.
- Link researchers with community organizations, State agencies and minority serving institutions.
- Link UAB with minority populations through the community outreach program and the assistance of the program staff in establishing the necessary trust, cooperation, and mutual partnership required in order to succeed in conducting research with minority and underserved populations.
- Provide infrastructure for management of awarded research grants related to minority health (scientific, technical, administrative and financial assistance).
- Develop culturally appropriate Health Promotion and Communication campaigns (message development, printed, electronic, mass media).
- Market research (primary and secondary research of information related to racial/ethnic minority health issues, conduction of focus groups, etc.)
- Provide access to latest news on minority health
- Provide access to information about other research conducted at UAB through the MHRC membership program.
- Identify potential collaborators/partners
- Include/promote member activities and work in the MHRC website, MHRC newsletter and MHRC e-News.
- Identify and assist in the recruitment of minority faculty
- Conduct special events planning and management (conferences, and workshops)
