Maria Norena is the Manager of the Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a university wide interdisciplinary research center dedicated to the study of health disparities and the advancement of health equity and equality among racial / ethnic populations.  As the Manager of the UAB MHRC, she assists the Center Director, Mona Fouad, MD, MPH, with the Strategic Planning, Development and Executive Management of the Center.

 

Her professional experience is in the areas of Strategic Planning, Business Development, and Integrated Marketing Communications in Healthcare. Before joining MHRC, Ms. Norena worked for 15 years in the creation and development of the UAB International Medical Service, a program of the UAB Health System devoted to the development of physician training programs and patient referrals from Latin America.     

 

Maria Norena has degrees in Social Communication Sciences, Mass Communications and Advertising from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia and Advanced Marketing from the University of California at Berkeley - Executive Training Program.  She is a Fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Center for Creative Leadership.

Mrs Norena is a Board Member of the Birmingham Business Alliance - Hispanic Business Council.
