John R. Stone, MD, PhD

Has doctoral training in philosophy with a focus on bioethics and extensive experience as a practicing cardiologist in preventive and interventional cardiology. He has worked since 1999 as Physician-Philosopher/Bioethicist with the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care.

Research, writing, and presentations on bioethics issue related to health and healthcare disparities, social justice, race, and work with communities. Publications related to these issues include: "Race and Healthcare Disparities: Overcoming Vulnerability, Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics," 2002; 23:499-518, and with Erika Blacksher, "Introduction," pp. 421-424 in the same issue if TM&B; "HIV/AIDS and Researcher-Community Collaboration," CME (South Africa), 2003;21(1):37-38; Annette Dula & John Stone, "Wakeup Call: Healthcare and Racism," Hastings Center Report, 2002;32(4):48; and "Justice, Disadvantage, and Allocation of Health Resources: Aside from Influence on Health, Should General Disadvantage Matter?", J Alabama Academy of Science, 2001(July);72(3):155-169. Also, Dr. Stone (along with Erika Blacksher, M.A.) was the co-editor of the 2002 special issue (cited above) of Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics that focused on vulnerable populations. In preparation (with Grosebeck Parham, M.D., as second author) is a manuscript that addresses ethical issues in the work of community health advisors.

Since 2000, co-investigator of the Deep South Network for Cancer Control, a grant centered at the University of Alabama at Birmingham that also involves the University of Southern Mississippi and Tuskegee University in the education and training of CHAs (community health advisors) to reduce health disparities in breast and cervical cancer and to enhance recruitment and retention of African Americans in clinical trials.

Since 2001, co-chair of the Bioethics Core for the tri-university Comprehensive Cancer Centers involving Tuskegee University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and University of Alabama at Birmingham. In collaboration with colleagues, this work has lead to two annual workshops in bioethics for graduate students, bioethics components of two summer institutes for faculty and graduate students, and a new course first taught in fall 2004 at Tuskegee University - "Biosciences Research and Ethics." Bioethics in this program overarches and laces through work of all other cores.

Since 2002, role as Associate Director of the Tuskegee University/University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa EXPORT Center for "Reducing Health Disparities in Alabamas Black Belt" and coordinator of the Public Health and Bioethics Education and Training Core.

Dr. Stone has a B.A. from Emory University, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Brown University. Honors include Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. At Tuskegee University he is physician-philosopher, National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care; Associate Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health; and Assistant Professor of Philosophy. Dr. Stone is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.
