Kyrel L. Buchanan, PhD, MPH received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in health education from Texas A & M University. Dr. Buchanan received her Master of Public Health degree in health education from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Spelman College. She is an experientially and academically-trained health education/health promotion professional who has been involved in health disparities and minority health research for approximately 10 years. Currently, Dr. Buchanan is a postdoctoral fellow in the Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC) Community Engagement Core under the mentorship of Dr. Mona Fouad, and works closely with the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC). In addition to diabetes, Dr. Buchanan has investigated multiple issues including childhood obesity, sexual health, health literacy, and mental health. Dr. Buchanan is a member of the MHRC’s Young Professionals Board and also holds national leadership positions within the Society for Public Health Education where she currently serves as co-chair of the Membership Committee & Student and New Professional Caucus, and is a member of the News & Views editorial board. She has also authored numerous presentations and publications related to her research interests.
